Editor's Welcome

Welcome to the Spring/Summer 2015 edition of PhilanthropyNYU

Global issues are ever changing, and the philanthropy world is being presented new focuses and challenges.  Over the next forty years, $41 trillion will be inherited by “next-gens,” building a stronger network of interconnected philanthropic causes and the emerging philanthropists that lead the way.   Information technology and social media are changing the way we communicate with donors and beneficiaries, revolutionizing measurement and impact.   We are currently in the midst of a changing landscape, with growing complexities and opportunities that directly affect the philanthropic sector.  Given the importance of these developments, we decided to focus this edition on the future of philanthropy; challenges, predictions and advice from the sector’s leading experts.

Melinda Gates, co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, offers unique recommendations to the next generation of philanthropists and shares the lessons learned from the foundation’s fifteen-year anniversary review.  Additionally, Odell Mays shares the importance of funding innovative ways of addressing philanthropic causes.

I would like to thank our contributors for their insight, inspirations and pioneering advice to the philanthropic community.  May you be inspired to be innovative and share the messages in these articles.

Thank you for taking the time to read this edition.

Sincerely,

Sara Ojjeh
